The hardest thing we face when it comes to travelling abroad for the summer is having to leave our beloved pets behind. However, it is not impossible to bring your dog along next time you plan a trip outside of the UK! All you need is a pet-friendly hotel, means of transportation, and a pet passport! We know that it looks like a hassle to get one, so in this article, we’ll help you figure out how to obtain a passport for your dog.

WHY DO YOU NEED ONE

Pet passports have changed a bit since Brexit. Before then you could use them to travel from and to the EU or Great Britain. Nowadays, to travel to Europe from Great Britain, you’ll simply a healthcare certificate. However, you can still use it in the UK, and if your pet passport was issued in Europe or Northern Ireland, then it can be used in all the places mentioned before.

Besides the need to have one to be able to travel to and from the EU, pet passports are useful as they summarise your dog’s healthcare. From their date of birth to their last vaccines or chip number, providing all this information to the pet control service when your travel will make it easier for everyone.

HOW TO GET ONE

If you’d like to focus on travelling outside of Great Britain, then you’ll need to get your dog an Animal Healthcare Certificate. It will include information such as the owner’s details, proof of vaccination, and the country you’re travelling to.

This can be obtained by a licensed veterinarian, and can only be done within 10 days before you leave, to make sure your pet’s vaccination is still up to date. Don’t worry though, the certificate can be issued within 24 hours if applied on a weekday. Make sure to check with your vet that they can deliver this certificate and if your dog can obtain it without any issue before your vacation.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The cost depends solely on how up-to-date you are with your dog’s health. If your dog has been microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and tested for rabies (needed in some countries), then you’ll only have to pay for the Animal Health Certificate, so around £100.
